5 DIRECTOR S LETTER Hello for January 2020, I am having a hard me realizing that we have already passed the first score of years in the 21 st century. Isn t it amazing? Happy New Year! Heading into this new year, Oxford Seniors will begin using a new aendance tracking system for checkins. We will be issuing all members a new scan card that s the size to fit on your keyring along with your Kroger card and other vendors. We ll be eliminang the big board of membership cards that have always been near the signin computer, but the new system also has an easy way to find you if you ve forgoen your card. This system will also help us track Meals on Wheels, Adult Day Service, Transportaon and other services that were not part of the old system. I know it s a change, but we ask for your paence and cooperaon. We expect to have someone staoned at the signin area most of the me to assist as we all adjust. Our lease with the City was renewed for the upcoming five years. We will miss Kim Geisler who rered from our housekeeper posion as of December 31, and so we will be welcoming a new partme person to the staff during January. We also said goodbye to Pae JacksonKirby last month; we do not expect to fill her Acvies Assistant posion again soon. Best wishes to both! Here s a New Year s Resoluon that I am already keeping! I am starng a group called Generaons, recognizing those acve in Oxford Seniors for more than one generaon, and beginning our connecon to the adult children of current members. Bruce Blankenship is an example of a currently acve second generaon member whose parents were very acve here when they were alive. Bruce has shared interesng pictures, copies of newsleers and other informaon about our organizaon s past. Another example is Alfrieda Stafford, who is now frequently joined by one or more of her daughters for the Friday lunch. We don t know these connecons automacally, so I ll develop a short info enrollment form to begin gathering names to include in our Generaons list. There won t be any fees, but we may schedule some special events for Generaons members to get together and help us bring our history and future together. We are happy to have Norma Pennock volunteering to lead our toolongdormant Markeng Commiee. Norma is a Meals on Wheels delivery volunteer and is one of our elected Oxford Township Trustees. We are also interested in beginning a paid internship in markeng for a Miami student. Is anyone interested in sponsoring that posion with a gi of $1500 that will pay the student spend? Do you have friends or family in this area who might be willing to lend a hand to Oxford Seniors? We want to recruit volunteers to assist in our markeng/ publicity, and we are interested in hiring one or two more partme, asneeded caregivers for our Adult Day Service. Please tell Jeanne Glaser or me if you have anyone to recommend that we should contact. Remember that Oxford Seniors is closed on bad weather days that close Talawanda Schools. Listen to local radio and TV for our closing noces, too. One added benefit of our new tracking system is that we can have it make phone calls to you about closings or other reminders, but we won t begin using that feature unl at least February. I hope you had wonderful holidays and that you enter this new year with hope and faith. Be safe in the cold weather and please remember us when you get cabin fever we re here for a getaway. 11 New Years Resoluons and Climate Change Here it is, the beginning of the new year. Time for a new beginning me for New Year s resoluons. What can we do differently this year that will help combat the polluon that causes climate change? Here s my list I Resolve: take a reusable container to restaurants for le overs. The plasc and Styrofoam containers oen used at restaurants are not recyclable and produce a huge amount of air polluon in their producon and waste removal. use reusable shopping bags or refuse singleuse plasc bags. Just handcarry the purchase out of the store. run the dishwasher only with a full load. Use energy saving seng and open the door to air dry the clean dishes. reduce my purchases. Do I really need it? Can I borrow, share, swap, or buy used? reduce food waste eat leovers, freeze for later, and compost food scraps. use a reusable water bole. Skip buying beverages in plasc boles or Styrofoam containers. turn off the lights in unused rooms, including phantom electric loads caused by computers, copier, TV, sound systems and coffee pots, etc. wash laundry on cold seng. write my congressperson weekly, to express my concern about climate change, and demand legislave acon to help save the Earth s climate for future generaons. Oxford Seniors no longer collecng plasc bole caps. The citywide plasc bole cap collecon to use for recycled plas- c benches for the schools ended Dec 31st. Therefore, Oxford Seniors is no longer collecng plasc bole caps. However you may recycle them with Rumpke. Just put them back on the boles and put the boles out with the rest of your recycling. 17 FRIDAY PROGRAMS Oxford Billiards Victory Bus Repaired In Time: Home Team Salvages One Win Over Hamilton It was a bumpy ride for Oxford Seniors pool team over the last four weeks, but things turned out alright in the end. In Thursday aernoon eightball acon on November 21, Hamilton led the tournament from start to finish and defeated the Oxford team, Then things got interesng. Since no tournament was held on November 28 (as only turkeys play pool on Thanksgiving Day), the Oxford and Hamilton squads resumed their rivalry a week later. In the December 5 tournament, aer geng out of the gate with a 10point lead in the first round and cruising along at exactly the speed limit through Rounds 2 through 5, Oxford Seniors victory bus suddenly started to spuer. Due to the engine overheang, a fan belt breaking, the transmission locking up in third gear, the catalyc converter burning up, and all four wheels falling off, the Oxford Victory Bus, obviously badly disabled, pulled over to the side of the road. Energized by this unexpected turn of events, Hamilton won all six games in Round 6 and swept across the finish line to an easy victory. Fortunately for the home team, however, all was not lost. Despite having limped home with tails between their legs the previous week, Oxford s sharpshooters repaired the bus and regrouped on Thursday aernoon, December 12, thumping the Hamiltonians with a convincing display of billiards experse, winning Friday, January 10th at 10:00 am Shuffleboard Tournament Please sign up to play in the tournament.
